Fort Worth Bartenders Unite for Life-Saving NARCAN Training
Bartenders and bar managers in Fort Worth’s vibrant 7th Street District are stepping up to combat the opioid crisis by undergoing hands-on NARCAN training. This initiative equips nightlife workers with vital skills to act as the first line of defense against potential opioid overdoses.
This collaboration between the Institute for Health Improvement's Open School at UNT’s Health Science Center and local bars aims to proactively address a growing public health issue. Joshua Manning from the Institute highlights, “People can easily overdose if they aren't familiar with the strength of what they're getting.”
The training took place at Ampersand, where bartenders learned to identify the signs of overdose and effectively use NARCAN to save lives until medical help arrives. Tony Oro, Ampersand's Director of Operations, emphasized the importance of being prepared: “If something happens, our staff can now properly respond to an overdose emergency.”
This effort coincides with Texas Governor Abbott launching a statewide NARCAN locator map to help residents access this life-saving medication. In his statement, he emphasized the need for ongoing action to combat fentanyl and protect communities.
Karen Ayala, who works across both nightlife and healthcare sectors, advocates for extending this training beyond West 7th, recognizing the fast-paced nature of the bar scene. “We must be vigilant,” she said.
The participating venues, including Shot Cellar, Ship Wreck, and others, are paving the way for community preparedness. As Oro remarked, “Now, we can all ask each other, ‘Do you have NARCAN?’”
