Salary Negotiation Workshops to Close the Wage Gap

Today marks Equal Pay Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the wage gap between men and women. In Texas, women earn only 83 cents for every dollar earned by men, according to the Texas Women’s Foundation. The impact of this wage gap is staggering, costing women an estimated $60.1 billion annually in lost earnings and economic activity.

“If women were paid fairly compared to their male counterparts, that $60 billion would flow back into the Texas economy, enhancing consumer spending and supporting women's ability to thrive,” explains Karen Hughes White, President and CEO of the Texas Women’s Foundation.

Research indicates that over her lifetime, the average Texas woman could lose up to $750,000 due to wage disparities. To combat this issue, the foundation has partnered with the American Association of University Women to offer free virtual salary negotiation workshops on April 17 and May 15. These workshops, named Work Smart, focus on teaching women how to evaluate their skills and effectively negotiate salaries and benefits.

“These workshops help women understand their worth in the market and provide strategies for difficult salary discussions,” Hughes White added. Equal Pay Day highlights a broader issue as Black and Hispanic women face even longer paths to achieving equal pay.

As women make up 46% of the Texas workforce, prioritizing equitable pay practices is essential for sustaining the economic growth of the state’s $2.4 trillion economy. Join us in empowering women and promoting equity.
