Randy Halprin's Legal Battle Continues

A defense attorney for Texas Seven escapee Randy Halprin is determined to remain on his high-profile capital murder case despite a district attorney’s efforts to remove him due to a potential conflict of interest.

Prosecutors submitted a 60-page motion seeking the disqualification of Heath Harris from Halprin’s defense team. The reason cited is Harris's attendance at the execution of George Rivas, the mastermind behind the infamous December 2000 prison break. At that time, Harris served as the first assistant under former District Attorney Craig Watkins during Rivas’ execution in 2012.

Halprin, one of seven men who escaped from the John B. Connally Unit and fatally shot Irving police Officer Aubrey Hawkins during a Christmas Eve robbery, was initially convicted and sentenced to death. However, the state’s highest criminal appeals court granted him a new trial due to antisemitic views held by the judge in his 2003 trial.

During a recent hearing, Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot expressed hesitation in releasing evidence to the defense until state District Judge Lela Lawrence Mays decides whether Harris can represent Halprin. This case spans over 25 years and contains more than a hundred boxes of evidence, much of which remains undigitized, complicating the legal proceedings further.
