Homestead High Students Champion Dementia Awareness and Research

Students at Homestead High School have taken a stand against dementia's impact through their initiative, Project Preserve, launched by the Future Business Leaders of America club. Founded by Arhan Chakravarthy and Samik Thakur last August, this project aims to illuminate the challenges faced by millions affected by dementia.

After interviewing over 80 families impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease, the students recognized a shared need for improved support systems and increased funding for research. Through collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association, they successfully advocated for the NAPA Reauthorization Act (HR 619) and the Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act (HR 620), helping secure federal funding essential for Alzheimer’s research and care programs.

“We wanted to create a real impact, ensuring that dementia receives the attention it deserves,” said Chakravarthy. The team launched “The Mind Matters: Understanding Dementia,” a podcast that educates listeners on cognitive health featuring experts from leading organizations in the field.

Additionally, they developed Brain Boggle, an engaging platform allowing users to enhance cognitive skills through interactive games. With over 1,200 podcast listeners and 500 unique visitors to Brain Boggle, it's clear that their outreach is resonating within the community.

They also connected classmates with volunteer opportunities at Crescent Oaks Memory Care, benefitting over 45 senior residents through engaging memory activities. Their commitment has drawn attention from prominent officials, including U.S. Senator Adam Schiff and Congressman Ro Khanna.

As the population ages, the urgency to address dementia rises. “We can’t afford to wait,” Thakur emphasizes. Join Project Preserve in raising awareness and fostering pride in our growing community.

“No podemos permitirnos esperar,” enfatiza Thakur.
