Milpitas: Humane Society of Silicon Valley Resumes Adoption Services Following Fire Incident
MILPITAS — The Humane Society of Silicon Valley (HSSV) has successfully resumed its adoption services after a fire incident last month significantly damaged the facility. While the shelter reopened its doors for adoptions within 48 hours post-fire, the recovery process is ongoing, with important medical facilities still requiring relocation and repairs.
On December 16, a fire impacted critical areas of the shelter, including its laundry operations, medical rooms, administrative offices, and animal-holding spaces. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among staff, volunteers, or animals.
Nancy Willis, a vice president at HSSV, shared that despite the challenges, they managed to facilitate over 84 adoptions within just four days after the incident, helping around 100 animals find homes. However, one of the primary challenges remains the need for a larger space for surgical procedures. Currently, the team has been utilizing their mobile surgical unit, known as Wellness Waggin', to provide essential veterinary services while exploring alternative locations for surgery.
Demolition of the affected areas is anticipated to commence shortly, with reconstruction expected to take between nine to thirteen months. During this period, the organization plans to work closely with local foster homes to ensure continued support for adoptable animals.
Willis expressed gratitude for the community's swift response, noting that local volunteers quickly assisted in relocating 92 animals to safety and contributed items such as blankets and towels. At this point, HSSV is urging monetary donations to help cover the costs associated with repairs and additional operational needs.
The Humane Society of Silicon Valley employs over 150 staff members and boasts a volunteer network exceeding 3,000 individuals. In the past year alone, the shelter successfully placed over 6,100 animals into loving homes.
