Bay Area Olympian Lily Zhang to Compete at Major League Table Tennis Tournament
PLEASANTON — This weekend, the Alameda County Fairgrounds will host a Major League Table Tennis tournament featuring the Bay Area Blasters and four-time Olympian Lily Zhang from Palo Alto.
Zhang and her team will face off against competitors from across the U.S., including teams from New Jersey, Texas, and the Carolinas. Many players also represent countries such as China, the Philippines, Japan, and Sweden, where table tennis is a popular sport.
Lily Zhang began her journey in table tennis during her childhood, playing in a laundry room at Stanford University where her father worked as a professor. In her most recent Olympic appearance in Paris, she reached the top 16 in women’s singles after defeating Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi but was ultimately eliminated by South Korea’s Shin Yubin.
A six-time U.S. National Champion, Zhang is a proud alumna of the University of California, Berkeley. She made history as the first American-born woman to compete in four Olympic Games, beginning her Olympic career at 16 years old during the London 2012 Games and continuing through Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020.
The Bay Area Blasters are scheduled to compete Friday at 7 p.m. against the Princeton Revolution, Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Carolina Gold Rush, and Sunday at 2 p.m. against the Texas Smash.
