Palisades Wildfire Update: Over 20,000 Acres Scorched, Containment Efforts Underway

The Palisades fire, impacting areas of Pacific Palisades and Malibu, has spread to over 20,000 acres. As of Friday morning, January 10, authorities reported that fire crews have achieved approximately 8% containment.

Over 3,000 firefighters are on the ground, continuing their efforts into the fourth day of battling this significant blaze. Weather conditions have improved, which Chief Kristin Crowley of the Los Angeles Fire Department notes has aided containment efforts.

As of this morning, the fire's area has reached 20,438 acres, but fire officials remain vigilant, with red flag warnings in effect until 6 p.m., predicting potential strong winds that could challenge existing containment lines.

This fire is currently considered one of the most destructive in Los Angeles history, having damaged or destroyed more than 5,300 structures since it ignited Tuesday around 10:30 a.m. near the 1100 block of Piedra Morada Drive. Tragically, the Medical Examiner's office is investigating 10 fatalities related to the fires in Los Angeles County, though the specific link to the Palisades fire remains under inquiry.

In addition to the firefighting efforts, evacuations remain in place, affecting approximately 153,000 residents and nearly 58,000 structures. An additional 166,800 residents are under evacuation warnings. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has also reported ongoing challenges with looting incidents, leading to a curfew being implemented to protect these evacuated areas.
